WHO WE ARE

Quality, Practicality, Excellence, Results

Toukido is a school of ju-jitsu that focuses on
self-defence and the practical application
of traditional martial art styles and forms.

The main art forms practised are Ju-jitsu, Spirit Combat and Traditional Judo. Weapons fighting is taught.

JU-JITSU

The root

Jujutsu, is a Japanese martial art and a method of close combat for defeating an armed and armored opponent in which one uses no weapon or only a short weapon. The word jujutsu is often spelled as jujitsu, ju-jitsu, jiu-jutsu or jiu-jitsu.

"Jū" can be translated to mean "gentle, supple, flexible, pliable, or yielding." "Jutsu" can be translated to mean "art" or "technique" and represents manipulating the opponent's force against himself rather than confronting it with one's own force. Jujutsu developed among the samurai of feudal Japan as a method for defeating an armed and armored opponent in which one uses no weapon, or only a short weapon.Because striking against an armored opponent proved ineffective, practitioners learned that the most efficient methods for neutralizing an enemy took the form of pins, joint locks, and throws. These techniques were developed around the principle of using an attacker's energy against him, rather than directly opposing it.

SPIRIT COMBAT

Modern Application

Spirit Combat Ju-jitsu is a synthesis of many different martial arts styles. The originator and Grandmaster, , Brian Dossett has learned many martial ways on his travels and has brought what he feels is the best of all of them together in a modern martial system. Based on Ju-jitsu it also incorporates ideas from Karate, Kung-Fu, Aikido, and Western boxing into separate syllabuses for adults and juniors.

JUDO

Sport

Judo (meaning "gentle way") is a modern martial art, combat and Olympic sport created in Japan in 1882 by Jigoro Kano. Its most prominent feature is its competitive element, where the object is to either throw or takedown an opponent to the ground, immobilize or otherwise subdue an opponent with a grappling maneuver, or force an opponent to submit by joint locking or by executing a strangle hold or choke. Strikes and thrusts by hands and feet as well as weapons defenses are a part of judo, but only in pre-arranged forms (kata) and are not allowed in judo competition or free practice (randori).

The philosophy and subsequent pedagogy developed for judo became the model for other modern Japanese martial arts that developed from koryū (traditional schools). The worldwide spread of judo has led to the development of a number of offshoots such as Sambo and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Judo practitioners are called judoka.
